A nation of dog lovers has following the saga of Lucky the dog is reeling from some recent bad news.
The sweet mixed breed, abandoned by a pet sitter who allegedly skipped town, was diagnosed with parvovirus on Christmas Day.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, parvo affects dogs’ gastrointestinal tracts and is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated feces (stool), environments or people.
In a Facebook post, Justine Stinnett, who is caring for Lucky, announced that the dog had been vaccinated, but only once. Stinnet wrote Sunday that the vet is reportedly giving Lucky a 50 percent chance at surviving.
It appeared Lucky was on the mend after Stinnett found him wasting away in a crate left out in the rain. Once 50 pounds, he had dwindled to an alarming 30. Veterinary staff has since been nursing him back to health; he was allowed to go home with Stinnett on Christmas Day.
Now dealing with parvo, he’s got quite a road ahead.
“I just want to thank everyone again for your kind words and continued support. This has been so incredibly hard on us and we so appreciate everyone’s help,” Stinnett wrote in a Facebook post.
