PetSmart Kicks Rescue Group Out of Store

“They keep saying they’re legally allowed to do this, but I’m not disputing that. I’m disappointed how they treated us. Not even a phone call, said Schiller.”

Eleventh Hour Rescue has operated an adoption center out of the Mt. Olive PetSmart in Flanders, New Jersey for the past four years.  They’ve helped find forever homes for over 10,000 dogs and cats in this time, but for whatever reason, they won’t be doing so going forward.

Linda Schiller, volunteer president and founder of Eleventh Hour Rescue is saying they got an order to evacuate the store as of September 25th.  They aren’t getting much of a reason out of PetSmart, and apparently they aren’t really telling anyone what is going on.

“I’m unhappy with how it was handled after being there for four years.  We’re a good presence in the community and I thought things were going fine,” Schiller said.  “They refused to give us a reason.  There’s got to be a reason for this and it’s got to be something out of left field.  I asked them if we did something wrong so we could make sure to not do it again.  But they refused to give any information.  I’m baffled.”

Schiller received a letter mentioning construction work about to be taking place at the store.  However, the letter didn’t say anything about moving back in when it was completed.  They don’t even know if they are going to be allowed to reapply for the space.

“PetSmart and PetSmart Charities have done a lot of good things, but they mishandled this situation,” Schiller said.  “They keep saying they’re legally allowed to do this, but I’m not disputing that.  I’m disappointed in how they treated us.  Not even a phone call.”

PetSmart Charities spokesperson Steve Pawlowski issued a brief press release statement on what’s going on.

“PetSmart Charities’ Everyday Adoption Center (EAC) agreement with 11th Hour has expired,” Pawlowski said.  “We’ve elected not to renew the agreement.  The EAC will close in October for remodeling.”

There’s no idea given if Eleventh Hour will be welcomed back into the EAC space when reconstruction is finished.  PetSmart Charities isn’t releasing any further information.  Not to the public or to Eleventh Hour.

Schiller has taken to the Eleventh Hour Rescue Facebook page to express her frustrations in a post that has multiple shares and comments.

“We are in trouble,” Schiller said on the page, sharing the news.  “We were shocked.  In the meantime, we have dogs and cats at the adoption center that we will need to find a place for.  In order to comply with Petsmart Charities’ request that we try to keep the center at full capacity at all times, we have more dogs and cats scheduled to come over the next few weeks.  Turning our back on them would mean certain death so we cannot cancel.  It is hard enough for any ordinary business to “liquidate its inventory” with only 30 days’ notice, but it is disastrous when your inventory consists of living, breathing creatures.”

Schiller also spoke to how this will create a financial hardship for the charity and rescue.  She also included an email she sent to a PetSmart Charities representative, asking for reconsideration.

“The tag line on your own email is: ‘A lifelong, loving home for every pet.’ which is exactly what we are about as well.  Since our goals are so closely aligned, this action by PetSmart Charities is inconsistent with what true animal rescue is all about,” Schiller said.  “We are asking you to please reconsider your decision and allow us to continue as your partner in Mt. Olive.  If you decide to not reconsider I respectfully ask for some additional time to get our dogs and cats currently residing at the EAC adopted or to find fosters.”

A Change.org petition was also launched to help, and is well over 2,500 signatures.  You can see and sign the petition by clicking here.

Schiller is holding out that the situation can still be fixed, but knows that it will take lots of outside help as well.

“I’m hoping for a ‘Hail Mary’ because on the 25th, we’re out,” Schiller said. “But we will find other places, other adoption centers that will invite us in on the weekends. We’re a small organization but we do a lot of adoptions..”

  3. Turns out another adoption center with more money is getting the space. St Hubert tried to get out in front of it stating they will give EHR all the time they need to find homes for all of the pets in their center but actions speak louder than a CYA press release.

    1. St. Hubert’s took over Noah’s Ark and closed it stating they would refurbish the space reopen in a year…that was three years ago.
If St.Hubert’s wants to do the right thing, they should reopen Noah’s Ark and let Eleventh Hour use that building.

  4. I signed the boycott petition……..Petco is where I will be going from now on, and I will say a prayer for the Eleventh hour Rescue…..God help them find loving caring homes for the animals they are caring for!!!!! I wish you all the best Eleventh Hour…….Godspeed!!!

    1. There’s a huge difference between pet ADOPTION and selling pets from puppy mills, genius. Adoption requires an application and approval.

  5. They signed new agreement with St. Hubert’s rescue. PetSmart approached St. Hubert’s with an agreement so there more to this story that PS isn’t saying.

  6. This is horrible. It’s like 5 minutes from my house, we were actually looking at dogs to adopt there earlier this year.

And to the author, it’s actually Flanders, NEW JERSEY

    1. They are still there until 25th they are having adoption event September 19 th at horse shoe lake 72 Eyland Ave Succasunna NJ There will be adoption vendors games for children and tricky tray for adults.

  7. This must just be a thing in either that one Petsmart or Petsmart in NY. My Petsmart always supports rescue groups and doesn’t sell animals. A bit more info about this would be good.

  8. Petco is not the answer. Please avoid shopping at PetSmart and Petco. They both have had some horrible conditions for the animals they sell.

Instead support your small local pet store that doesn’t sell animals. And when you’re ready to adopt, go to your local shelter or a rescue.

Petco & PetSmart engage in the same kind of upsetting practices. Here’s more info regarding Petco specifically.

    1. Eleventh hour rescue at pesmart is a rescue group they are a no kill shelter. Not like St Huberts that is movimg in. Eleventh hour rescue saved a dog from St Hubert that they were going to euthanize .

  9. I know they are remodeling the stores to make them smaller, but this could have been handled differently. If you’re going to profit by selling stuff for pets, you definitely need to treat them kindly.

  10. Hopefully there’s a locally based store that will allow them in…. our local Petsmart still hosts the cats, but rarely dogs. The rescues use other stores for dog adoption events.

  11. I cannot even finish reading this article, it is making me sick, such disgusting humans, the humane society in this area should be notified and a complete investigation should be held,

  12. This is shameful. I hope you are able to rehome the cats and dogs to more humane shelters in a timely manner. Lesson learned, unfortunately … in the end, Petsmart and Petco are corporations that only care about profits and shareholder value.

  13. Had to be New York!! That is stupid my Pet Smart Modesto CA also supports rescue groups. Don’t shop there anymore so they can see the loss. When I go they ask for donation for rescues I would think they’d support it! Shame on Pet Smart!

  14. They have until the 25th to clear the store so if you or anyone you know is looking to adopt or foster contact them because they could use the help..

  15. EHR is actually located in NJ; they are being kicked out of the Petsmart in Flanders/mt olive, NJ (west jersey). This situation is very sad, as they are a wonderful organization.

  16. Look, instead of fretting about pet smart, start looking for another venue. Those dogs need action, so find someone else, or use an empty field, parking lot or another business.

  17. Everyone is quick to assume the worst about Petsmart but doesn’t even know both sides of the story, this is why the world is the shape its in, people will quickly hate something based on one side of a story, what if 11th hour is at fault here? Im sure all of you people will quickly hate them if thats the case and love Petsmart again…smh no faith in humanity

  18. I am sorry Petsmart, they deserve a reason. If they have been there for 4 years and there hasn’t been a problem, they deserve a reason for being evicted and especially if they won’t be invited back. Maybe there is a good reason, whatever it is, they deserve an answer.

  19. I refuse to make any sort of judgment or sign a petition against PetSmart because there’s a serious lack of information.

  20. Why can’t they have both rescues come in for adoption events. Isn’t it supposed to be about the animals and getting them into loving homes

  21. I don’t like Petsmart. I’ve complained several times about witnessing one of the groomers, in my town, and how she handles the dogs. They always cry and try to get away. The store made excuses for the girl and said it was the dogs fault. I can’t shop there anymore. Too disturbing 🙁

  22. I don’t like Petsmart or Petco either, I’ve heard bad things……..little while ago a dog died at Petsmart while at the groomers…….that’s just one thing.

  23. Very poorly handled by Petsmart, whatever the reason for their decision. You’ve put this rescue group in a very bad situation, not to mention he animals they rescue.

    1. Actually that was at a Petco store. I NEVER shop at either of these chain stores due to the high prices and rude employees, we need to all support the small local owned pet shops and always adopt from local rescue groups.

  24. I an dine with Petsmart and I urge others to do the same thing but mopre importantly they need to know why you are no longer shopping there, Emails, bad reviews and phone calls, by the 1000’s/

  25. They did this to a rescue here in Michigan.
They said because they brought in a baby goat that they brought in to be fitted for a collar.
To find out from current employees there have been goats in there before and even a pig and never a problem ..
They need to make there rules clear. There are do many other petstores.
They never addressed it as far as I know.
They are really on my last choice for pet supplies.
I even have found another place to use for grooming

  26. Yes, the groomers at Petsmart are awful! They lie about the service and my dog got sick from unhygienic equipment. at the Flanders New Jersey store!

Shame on Petsmart for being so heartless! Will no longer shop there.

  27. I have 4 dogs and I help with local Animal Rescues GUESS WHAT PETSMART you JUST LOST ALL MY BUSINESS! NOW HOW SMART are you now?

  28. The majority of these rescues / shelters, etc are run by bat sh*t crazy women. I wouldn’t allow them anywhere near my business. They have zero control of their emotions. Most of these rescue type dogs are unsocialiszed and have significant behavioral issues. I would not recommend.

    1. I think you might have more issues than my adopted rescues, Bill. Oh by the way, I am one of those bat sh*t crazy rescue women…..stupid people who do stupid things to companion pets make me crazy.

  29. Is this one of the groups caught bringing dog aggressive dogs to the store on adoption day? There is a policy in the agreement and some stores have had issues. The stores will never tell the whole story when actions like this are taken. They don’t want to get involved in a public argument.

  30. While I am an animal lover and believe we as humans should do everything we can for all animals,Maybe its time to start thinking about euthinasia. I read more and more reports about shelters needing so much help, money and are overcrowded with animals, and seeing this for myself at the local shelter,283 cats and 28 dogs , I can say that they dont look very comfortable or happy. Some are even living in conditions almost as bad as puppy mills and other places that sell animals for profit .If I had a lot of empty acres ,I would gladly let them live on it, for free and take care of all I could, but in reality , its just about impossible .

  31. Why not give credit where its due – they had the place for 4 years, they knew the lease was going to be up. If everyone who helps is badmouthed online when their agreed term of support or aid comes to its the end of its agreed contract then it will hardly inspire others to help.
