Heartbreaking Rescue of a Dog Who Refused to Leave Fallen Friend’s Remains

Hachika was rescued and now has a forever family, but she got her name by refusing to leave her deceased friend’s side, even after all that was left was bones.

No Kill Kern, a rescue group out of Bakersfield, California, received a call about a dog that had been living in a field for over two months.  When volunteers got there, the sight their eyes fell upon was both beautiful and heartbreaking.  This poor dog lost her best friend when they were hit by a car, and she faithfully stayed by her fallen friend’s side, even after she had been reduced to nothing but bones.  Her loyalty has earned her the name Hachika, after the famously loyal dog of legend from Japan.

Most people that are big fans of dogs know who Hachiko is, but for those who don’t, he was a dog that was legendary for a loyalty shown by few other animals in this world – humans included. Hachiko waited in the same spot in the same train station in Japan that his human would arrive home on every day at the same time for nine years after his human’s passing.  At first, people’s reaction to the dog wasn’t exactly friendly.  However, once an article was done about him in 1932, people began to recognize him for the symbol of loyalty his is known as today, and even began to bring him food and water during his wait.

It would appear that our new friend here Hachika is cut from the same cloth as her namesake.  There’s isn’t a lot known about her past, but what is known is that she has absolutely refused to leave her friend’s side.  The dog that she palled around with had apparently been hit by a car at some point, and died either because of her injuries or because of the exposure, dehydration, and starvation she faced as a result of them.  Regardless, Hachika’s love for her friend meant that she wasn’t leaving her body until they both could be rescued.

Today, she has been adopted and is part of a loving forever family, but after seeing this video, her story will stay with you for a while, just as she did with her friend.  It’s comforting to know that despite how awful the world can seem at times, there are dogs like her that can teach us that change can start with us, and it isn’t that hard to do.

  1. Oh good lord. STOP USING THE WORD “HEARTBREAKING”! I swear there is a set list of words headline writers pull from.

    1. What other word would YOU use? Seems to me heartbreaking is pretty apropos in this instance.

      1. distressing, upsetting, disturbing, heart-rending, sad, tragic, painful, traumatic, agonizing, harrowing; pitiful, poignant, plaintive, moving, tearjerker, tearjerking, gut-wrenching

    2. We use plenty of other words – heart-wrenching, touching, gripping, tear-jerking, moving, etc. When choosing a title, we know there are certain words and phrases that fans respond to more than others, so that’s how we decide what to say. So, blame empathetic fans for their emotional response to “heartbreaking!” 😉

    1. You right, who love animals are real good human, but who hate are pure evil. Human not let alone a own parent, care and help, beast? oh yes doing. Sorry for what I said, but are what I see and strong believe, see what beast liberals doing with olders? are one point who can’t forgive, are senior and sick living in shelter or street and with little or not food and need real help and housing, but in all places are beast liberal who ignore rules and Law, and full with youngers and children, youngers who can work and not living free and damage anothers, that why Clinton said Trump are a most danger, but for who? only for beast liberals and lazy who won be free and get free money. I am 67 to 68, my family don’t care, also I am disable, my only real company and daughters are my human dog, who are senior too, and yes I cook for her, are my lovery partner who give me power for live. She are my real daughters and i must live for her.

  2. Dear Fred
Thank you Fred for sharing such a touching story.
Seeing the area of a home from zooming around the area
made me believe that the owner was soo close to her home.. Whether it was true or not…it left me with such an imagination because there was nothing said about the owner. Sad to know that houses were not far from looking out across to the sand and water … gave me such heart wrenching feeling in the pit of my stomach. Obviously loyalty was not in a human heart to stop for such tragic. My imagination wonders to how a body was on a beach and not the road? It would of been nice to have seen a picture of the owner if it were available. Any dog dedicated to their owner…the owner had to have been just a dedicated. The song about tears was awesome but would of been better
if it wasn’t about a husband. I hope you posted this on facebook? It’s worth sharing.
