Steve Adkins is having a happy new year, indeed, after being reunited with his dog, Ranger Danger, who had been missing since May.

His owner was used to taking the 1-year-old Australian shepherd with him everywhere but on the day Ranger went missing, Adkins decided it was too hot to leave the dog in the truck while he got his hair cut, so the dog stayed home. But while Adkins was out, Ranger was taken from the backyard.

Adkins’ daughter, Jessica, told KOMO they looked everywhere for the dog, putting up flyers, checking in with veterinary offices and making social-media posts, but all to no avail. She said her dad never gave up hope, though.

Eventually, Ranger was found wandering in Roswell, NM — more than 100 miles from his home in the town of Portales!

Animal control took him to the shelter, where his time was fast running out. Luckily, several people stepped up to donate and eventually, a Colorado rescue group sponsored vetting and foster care for Ranger (who was going by the name of “Neptune” at the shelter).

When a family friend told Jessica that someone had spotted Ranger’s picture on a volunteer-run site that saves shelter animals whose time has run out, Adkins headed straight to the Roswell Animal Shelter.

Jessica said that Ranger’s tail hasn’t stopped wagging since the pair was reunited and her dad hasn’t stopped smiling.

Most importantly, Ranger has since been microchipped!

Both Adkins and his daughter are grateful to the people of the Roswell Urgent Animals at Animal Control Facebook page for volunteering and doing what they do to help the animals at the high-kill shelter.
