Members of the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department rescued a man and his dog from icy Lake Legend in Illinois on Monday.

Upon arriving at the scene, they found the owner attempting to rescue his dog, pushing him over the ice in a kayak, when the ice broke, sending both into the freezing water.

Rescuers were successful, reaching and pulling both to safety.

Harlem-Roscoe Chief Don Shoevlin said ice rescue team members encountered a half-inch of ice on the lake.

“They had to work pretty quickly because in those types of situations you don’t know how close individuals are to experiencing hypothermia,” Shoevlin told the Beloit Daily News. “It was pretty cold.”

“Everyone did a fantastic job,” Shoevlin said. “It’s great to see everyone safe and it’s always good when you can assist someone expediently without being transported for injuries.”
