Pregnant mama Maria and her unborn puppies were scheduled to be euthanized until a North Texas no-kill shelter gave them a chance at life. When the puppies were born, they were named after the Von Trapp children from The Sound of Music. Now they all need homes. Open your heart to a dog in need today, and they will undoubtedly become one of your “favorite things.”

Heavily pregnant Maria was in a Dallas shelter and faced euthanasia – her unborn puppies included. North Texas no-kill shelter Operation Kindness swooped in just in the nick of time and gave these pit bulls a chance at life by placing them with foster mom Erin Hannigan, principal oboist of the Dallas Symphony and dedicated dog rescuer.

Operation Kindness stepped up, and immediately lined up a foster home (mine) since she was due any moment,” Erin said. “She was supposed to give birth at my house, but went into labor in the shelter. She had seven healthy, one-pound puppies, and they’ve been in my house, growing and amazing me, since one day of age!”

There were five female and two male puppies born, so they were named after the Von Trapp children. Now they all need homes – including Mama Maria.

“Mama is a wonderful dog, though seemingly mistreated in her former life,” Erin explained. “With clipped ears and tail (someone clearly did it with scissors), she has endured things we’ll never know, but she loves everyone she meets.”

Mama and babies are currently in Dallas. If you would like to adopt or are interested in more information, please email Erin.
