In a surprisingly magnanimous move, Russia is donating a young puppy to France to compensate for their loss of Diesel, the police dog who was killed by gunfire during a raid in Paris.  Russian officials say it is an act of solidarity with the French people.

This is not going to be an article about political platforms or opinions on refugees.  Any hateful, bigoted, or irrelevant comments will be deleted.  This is an article about members of the world trying to come together in a time of need.  Regardless of ulterior motives, etc., this is a nice gesture on behalf of Russia, especially considering that they’ve been in the headlines for some not very nice things in the last few years.

Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois, was killed during a raid targeting suspected Daesh ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud.  (For a breakdown on the whole ISIS-ISIL-Daesh thing, click here.)  Abaaoud was killed, and several others were arrested.  Initial reports stated that a woman strapped with explosives caused the blast that killed Diesel, but later reports say that might not have been what happened.

Thousands have expressed their condolences for the beloved dog, and now Russia, whose people recently suffered their own losses at the hands of jihadists, is joining in on the comradeship.  Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokolstsev sent a letter to France expressing their support and willingness to fight terrorism.

According to a Russian police Facebook page, little Dobrynya will be “handed over to France in testimony of solidarity with the people of France and the French police in the context of the fight against terrorism.”

In Russian folklore, Dobrynya was a knight who embodied goodness, bravery, and altruism.
