“People are often surprised to learn it’s possible to find a purebred that fits your lifestyle AND is also in serious need of a loving, forever home. ” from the AKC RESCUE NETWORK

It is true that some people will fall in love with a certain breed of dog.  Perhaps it comes from a fond childhood memory of knowing the “perfect” dog or watching the Crufts or Westminster Dog Shows and falling head-over-heels with a champion.  While there are reputable breeders out there who are true animal and breed-lovers, there are far many more puppy mill breeders who don’t have any concern what-so-ever about the animals, the conditions in which they live, and, most specifically, the health and well-being of the dogs and puppies.  Sadly, these are most often the very puppies you will find in pet shops across the country that are selling “papered” dogs and very reason for the huge campaign asking people who are looking for companion animals to ADOPT DON’T SHOP.

ACK Molly

Many people who do want a specific breed may feel the only way to obtain that particular dog is through a breeder, but that is not the case.  There are many rescue organizations across the country that save certain breeds and have them available for adoption. In fact, there are many purebred dogs to be found in your local shelters, as well.

AKC Cindy
Cindy is a sweet 9-year old Maltese mix, who due to her owner’s long work days was locked in a bathroom for over 16 hours a day. She is very dainty, sleeps quietly, and loves long walks. Cindy is located in Germantown, WI, and available through Northcentral Maltese Rescue. For additional information see Cindy’s adoption page.

If you or someone you know is looking for a unique breed, the AKC Rescue Network, which was officially recognized in 2013 by the American Kennel Club, has more than 450 AKC Rescue Network groups across the United States. Spearheaded  by the AKC’s “National Breed Clubs,” many of these rescue groups have breeders and breed fanciers who are central to the rescuing, rehabilitation, and rehoming of many of these dogs.  A recent AKC Rescue Network survey found that the top three reasons people surrendered their dogs were due to a change of lifestyle, the feeling the breed was not right for them, and having no time to spend with the dog.  And, as with many rescue organizations, they are always in need of foster homes, volunteers, and donations.

AKC Robin
This is Robin, a pretty girl about 3 years old, spayed, micro-chipped, and she is all up-t0-date on her vaccinations.  She is  being fostered near Tulsa, OK, and would love a forever home. For more information on Robin, check her out on PETFINDER or email [email protected]  from the American Bullmastiff Association Rescue.

AKC Vince
Vince, is a two year+ Weimaraner who came to Weimaraner Rescue of Southern California (Friends for Pets) in terrible condition including deep bite wounds around his neck, face and legs. He was held for longer than normal at the shelter as he was so emaciated, but is now 57 lbs and very handsome. Vince needs a loving family that understands his fear of large men, having been severely abused by a man this stature and will be patient and encouraging. Vince will need patience, understanding, and encouragement – and an adopting family who understands his fear. Vince has Hoppers (genetic spinal dysraphism) which does not slow him down, but does not allow him to go jogging or hiking. For more information on Vince, learn more on PETFINDER or contact [email protected]
