Those Minnesota nights, even in early October, are chilly and so when 2-year-old wandered from his home earlier this week — he was very lucky that a loyal family pooch stayed with him for his entire nighttime “adventure.”

Bella Grace, an English springer spaniel — along with her own precocious child, a 12-week-old puppy named Madeline — stuck by the boy’s side. How do we know? Because the heat-seeking device on the State Patrol aircraft employed in finding the boy captured the dogs’ heat signatures, as well!

The boy was found in corn field about a quarter-mile from his home at 9:20 pm the same night.

It was a whirlwind evening for the family. Grandma, who had been watching the boy along with his three cousins, ages 7, 11 and 12, and realized about 6:15 that the toddler and dogs were gone. After a search was fruitless, the police joined in the search, as did additional fire and rescue personnel, two bloodhounds and about 200 volunteers. Also — the patrol helicopter.

The device aboard the chopper detected the boy and the dogs. Video shows the dogs walking around the lost toddler, keeping him company and keeping watch, no doubt, until help finally arrived.
