A young Massachusetts girl afflicted with a terminal disease received the lasting gift of friendship last week.

3-year-old Spinal Muscular Atrophy sufferer Greer Ramsey said she has always wanted a dog, and thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, 7-month-old miniature poodle Sparkles is her new BFF.

The Foundation stepped in to find her a four-legged friend when they heard about her condition. Spinal muscular atrophy affects all of the muscles of the body: doctors didn’t expect Greer to see her third birthday.

“It’s the number one genetic killer of children under the age of two and Greer just turned three in August. She’s doing very well and we’re very hopeful that that will continue. But, every cold and flu season could be her last,” said Kate Ramsey, Greer’s mother.

Sparkles was flown in from Chicago to start her new life in Massachusetts with Greer. “The foundation was more than happy to find a breeder to get this miniature poodle out here today for her special wish,” said Lauren Cotter of Make A Wish Foundation.

“I think this is wonderful,” said Ramsey. “She will benefit from this in so many ways. She wanted a puppy and this is the best possible puppy for her.”
