12 Year Old Hero Saves Dog from Attack by Abusers

Update (6/1/12): This afternoon the Wellington SPCA presented a Bravery Award to Damon Boyer-Marwood, during his school assembly at Brandon Intermediate in Cannons Creek. Damon has made headlines around the world after he bravely rescued a terrier dog named Rose from being beaten by a group of youths last week. Damon also received a Mayoral Commendation from Mayor Nick Leggett.

Original article continued…

The Wellington SPCA says it intends to honor a 12 year old boy with a bravery award for coming to the rescue of a dog that was being attacked by a group of schoolyard bullies. Damon Boyer-Marwood, 12, was walking home from Brandon Intermediate School in Cannons Creek on Thursday when he heard an animal cry. Moving closer to the sound, he found a group of children holding down a small female dog and taking turns kicking it. They also took turns beating it with a cricket bat.

Infuriated by what he saw, the brave child stepped in and told the group of boys to leave the dog alone and go away. At first they resisted, but his conviction was such that after a brief standoff, they released the dog and fled.

“They stood there for a bit, then they ran inside,” he said.

Damon took the battered dog to a friend’s house before calling the SPCA to try to identify an owner. A microchip scan turned up a name and address, and the dog was returned to owner Sosefina Leota yesterday. She insisted on meeting the hero who saved her dog, saying “I want to thank him from my heart, I want to know his face.”

Damon’s grandmother, Jenny Marwood, is proud, and says the kind-hearted boy saved the dog’s life. “It makes you wonder what would have happened if he didn’t step in.”

In a written statement, Wellington SPCA inspector Kaycee Polkinghorne said an investigation is underway. “Because of the ages, there’s not a lot we can do prosecution-wise, but it does reinforce the importance of having education in schools about things like this. You just have to to wonder what’s going on to make them think this is acceptable behavior.”

Polkinghorne praised Damon for his moral fortitude, and said that he hopes others will follow his example.  “I just hope there are more kids out there who are willing to stand up for what’s right and not be afraid to say it.”

Something needs to be done about the bullies. If they are doing this at a young age, then guess what happens when they grow up. They won’t be content to pick on animals. Make the punishment fit the crime. Good job to the 12 year old that stood up to these bullies…..

Those sick children are psychopaths in the making. They ought to be severely punished and put in counseling before they start doing the same abuse to people. Which they will. It’s the historical nature of a psychopath. That boy was an angel of mercy.

The kids beating the dog need to be punished. Accountability isisding in raising the youth of this generation. Beating a dog and thinking its acceptable leads to more violence. The boy who stopped it is honorable and brave. He’s a credit to his parents and family. Great job son.

I don’t care what age you are if you can think for yourself you know it isn’t right to beat something. They will walk free and then do something again to more animals or a person next they need to be punished for their crime. I hope the dog was not badly injured did not say much on how the dog was. It’s funny how people make a big deal about how animals are being mistreated , but hundreds of children are being abused everyday it seems like peoples priorities are in the wrong place. Child have a voice and need to speak out if harm is done to them
people will notice a childs demoner and bruises
Much faster a dog or animal cant speak has fur that covers most bruising and people are not so in tune with an ANIMAil that can have a soul and compassion.

your an ass! It usually starts with animals. If they abuse an animal as a child, there is a good chance they will abuse a child/spouse as an adult. So YES IT IS A BIG DEAL. If you don’t care about animal, then stay the F off this page.

Statistics prove that children who were/are abused are most likely to harm animals….as adults , we know what happens then. My father was Chief Deputy County Counsel of Childrens Protective Services, it is sad, but very true. Your comment “not a story of child abuse”, it absolutely is related…RED FLAG for sure.

This website is called ” Life with Dogs ” I think you’re on the wrong page. This is a story about a really great kid saving a dog from some really bad kids. Child abuse would be talked about on a child abuse website and pretty much everywhere you look. This is a feel good story about a dog saved from abuse on a dog website. Duh!!

Firstly this isn’t FUNNY in any way and to say that is moronic. You do not trade one issue for another because they are “all issues”. We as adults need to care for and change many things about our community and this is just one of many. So you “Just Saying” is not saying very much… it just makes everyone reading your comment think your are in support of letting kids (abused or not) abuse animals which would be as asinine as abusing an animal or child in the first place.

This is a dog site, and so naturally I would expect to read articles about dogs. To read about a brave young man saving a dog from abuse is heart lifting. I am very happy the dog was saved from major injury or death, and at the end, the abusers were scared off by Damon who showed courage and conviction. This is a feel good story, sadly the downside is that the children who attacked the dog is a very sad event. There are many areas that need to be dealt with. Laws to make either the children or adults be held accountable for their actions, child services to investigate for child abuse from their adults, and perhaps some support from child psychologists for the children for their potential to continue this and escalating into something far more serious. But let me emphasise, this is a ‘FEEL GOOD’ story of a young boy saving a dog from a very bad situation from some disturbed children on a Dog Site. Maybe, on another site I can read about a young boy saving another child from a group of bullies, but that is for another site, or for the Daily News. Again I say, well done Damon.

BRAVO to this couragous young man who stood up to these bullies. Since the perps in this can’t be brought up on charges for this, maybe the local paper, TV or school flyers should be circulated to embarass these misguided young boys. Sad is the fact that people would treat a defenseless animal this way to begin with.

God Bless Damon! And what do you mean because of their ages not a lot could be done prosocution wise! That’s total BULLSHIT!!! They need to be accountable for their actions now, at this age, so this behavior doesn’t escalate!!! I hope they rot in hell!!

I believe in my heart that bad things happen to bad people…it may not happen right away, but it will happen and it’s called karma! These useless wastes of space that hurt this dog should be removed from this planet. Thin the herd. They will just turn out to be adult bullies when they get older. BRAVO to you young man for being brave! You are a true hero in my book!

The bad boys should go to Juvie and their parents reprimanded and held accountable if they cannot be. Zero tolerance for inhumane behavior. Anyway, what goes around comes around.

    ANONYMOUS..
Abusers, murderers, fiends START with animals!
    It is well documented!
How brave of this youngster to take on not just one bully but several!
Doubt that you love animals as much as the next guy..certainly not as much as one brave boy!

Damon, I’m glad you saved the dog but I’m more proud of you for having the courage to stand up for what you know is right. High five, kiddo!

Wow thank you! U not only showed u don’t really care about animals but also lack of intelligence, lol this is a dog website, you have to pick ur battles everyone has their passion, and guess what almost every child abuser, killer or rapists has in their background?? Umm animal abuse, hmm maybe the core problem is just as important?? What a stupid comment, smdh

Anonymous: Child abusers don’t usually do it in public because they know they’ll be arrested or worse. I won’t tolerate abuse of any kind, child, animal, spouse or family. The problem usually starts with animals and moves to larger mammals, like children and women. If we can stop it and reverse the mind set early, when they start with the animals, we just might be able to change the abuser. I won’t ‘beg your pardon’ I will tell you flat out MY PRIORITIES ARE IN EXACTLY THE RIGHT PLACE.
