Chelsey Fletcher of Yucca Valley, California has cooked up a way to raise the funds needed to provide surgery for her pit bull – by making all-natural dog treats.
Chelsey rescued her dog Atlas, who is afflicted with a deformity in his front legs, from the Devore Animal Shelter where he was scheduled to be euthanized at only six months. The puppy was doomed to a life cut short at the shelter where the pit bull kill-rate is about 90 percent, according to Chelsey. She agreed to foster him.
Atlas walks on the insides of his paws and appears to be suffering.
“I had three options,” said Chelsey, “I could put him down, which isn’t an option, I could have both his front legs taken off, which isn’t an ideal option, or I could get him surgery, which is a very expensive option.”
The surgery would cost about $10,000, which the Fletchers could not finance. They worried about how they could find a solution. Atlas, meanwhile, was busy bonding with Perry, the Fletchers’ toddler.
“They’re smitten with each other. They are inseparable,” Chelsey said. “The relationship I see between them is what convinced me he will need the surgery.”
Chelsey used to be a head baker at a North Carolina cupcake company, so the stay-at-home mom came up with the ingenious plan to create delicious, homemade, all-natural dog treats in her kitchen. With the help of her sister, who works in marketing in Illinois, the pair have raised about $3,200 by shipping the snacks around the world.
“All the ingredients we use are researched, everything is made fresh-to-order and we use high-quality ingredients,” Fletcher assured. “Dogs seem to love them. They go batty.”
Some of the wide variety of flavors include pumpkin white chocolate, Snickerdoodle, apple cinnamon, peanut butter carob, sweet potato and molasses. Other flavors are available upon request.
