Twenty-Six pit bulls rescued from dog fighting ring in Florida

Twenty-six dogs were rescued Monday afternoon when Hillsborough County animal control in Florida acted on an anonymous tip and busted a dog fighting ring.

The backyard of the home was surrounded by a six-foot-tall fence to prevent people from seeing what was going on inside. Over the weekend an anonymous tip came in reporting hearing animals crying and howling behind the large fence. When Deputies and investigators served a search warrant on the property in Plant City, Florida on Monday afternoon they found twenty-six pit bull terriers some with fresh wounds.

All twenty-six dogs were brought to Hillsborough County Animal Services and have been seen by a veterinarian. They are all expected to survive though some have serious injuries. The dogs vary in age and injury. They will be rehabilitated before being ready for adoption.

Investigators found other evidence of fighting at the property. No one has been arrested in the case yet, but officials are seeking criminal charges against several individuals.

The dog in the picture looks like he is smiling, happy to be rescued from such pain and misery. I hope all the dogs find happy, forever homes.

The dog looks like he/she is now content. Knowing the person holding him will not hurt him. Thank god they were found. The people responsible for this dog fighting ring need to go to jail for a loooonnnnggg time.

I am constantly amazed at the unconditional love these dogs exhibit even after living under such stressful and cruel circumstances. I am humbled by their forgiving nature.

The consequences for dog fighting should include confiscation of all property on which dog fighting or dog fighting equipment is found, including immediate confiscation of homes with their contents, all vehicles, equipment, etc. Unless you put the hurt on these people, dog fighting will never stop

I am reading this story and then the comments. I am disturbed by the fact of how people treat animals. Good for those people who reported the dog fighting ring.

I read down to the comments and find yours that is cruel and untrue. If you make that comment then someone else can say that all white people are
Ku Klux Klan. Both statements are untrue and not helpful.

Unfortunately after working for a vet for over 40 years I find this to be true- I have never yet and I am not saying there aren’t some out there especially in this neck of the woods- but never had a fight dog brought in that did not belong to a black person.

So-described “negro” here. I grew up in Brooklyn, watching dogs fights. They happen everywhere, all the time. And though the macho-ism and the stupidity is part of it, yes, it extends beyond that.

These things happen (the MOST, not exclusively; michael vick sure as fuck wasn’t poor) in poor black neighborhoods because there is a) little income anywhere else (probably because you are an ex-con and no one wants to hire you, or just because you’re black and no one wants to hire you…it’s illegal but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen) b) breeding puppies and fighting dogs brings home more than a full time min wage job c) everyone does it, and thusly few of us “negroes” are raised to realize “wow, this is fucked up”.

What we need to do is educate kids in low income communities so that they don’t have to turn to illegal shit to put money on the table. Learning to be humane will come with that, too. We have the money to do it, but the problem is that such a program would be labeled racist.

Well, like they said in Avenue Q; everyone’s a little bit racist sometimes.

How can anyone give this a “thumbs down” — the poster is stating a fact. Because you don’t like what the fact reveals, you give a thumbs down???

Actually, dog fighting is a part of white redneck culture in the south. It is also a big part of Asian culture, and dog fighting as as cock fighting is part of hispanic culture. It’s a shame we all own. I don’t care what shade your complexion is, if you are fighting dogs, you are just SCUM!

“Check yo news baby” … yeah, what a surprise at who’s running it … but like Michael Dick says, “it’s a part of their culture”

Being stupid is not a defense and being prejudiced is not a helpful way to get this turned around. Dog fighting is wrong and someday everyone will know it.
It is not limited to colour/race/gender. It is a taught behaviour and like other behaviours it can be changed.

Anonymous @ 12:41pm, why are the comments deemed “prejudiced”? They state facts: one from someone who works in the field and has experienced interaction with those involved, who, in the poster’s experience, have all been black; and the other is a direct quote from a black individual, who was proven guilty of running a dog fighting ring, who clearly stated, that dog fighting is part of the black culture. Why is that prejudiced?

Well for one thing, the person working in the field is only covering one area which happens to be predominately black so obviously most of the people fighting dogs there will be black. Then you have an asshole football player who makes up some lame excuse to try and get out of punishment by saying it’s “part of their culture.”

Dog fighting is very heavy in the South and I’m pretty certain the population down there is mostly white. There is a town not far from where I live that has a problem with dog fighting and the majority of the population there are Mexicans, guess who most of the people fighting dogs are? Yep, Mexicans.

Dog fighting began in the UK and eventually came to the US. Guess what color their skin was? Bottom line is, there isn’t a certain race that’s more or less apt to fight dogs, but honestly who cares who is doing it? The only thing that matters is it’s illegal and inhumane to the animals involved no matter what color of skin you have. How about we ditch the finger pointing and help the animals instead?

People make a profit off of the pain and suffering of these dogs. The property and all moneys should be conviscated. They should be givin long jail sentences. There has to be punishments that will deter people from doing such horrible things.Im just happy I can give my two pits a happy and healthy home.Oh of course, with plenty of love.

Glad to hear these dogs will have a chance, unlike many dogs that have been ‘rescued’ only to be put to death without a chance, such as the case in Alabama in 2010. May all who participate in such violence see God soon.
