Nestlé Purina is voluntarily recalling some of its Purina ONE beyOnd Our White Meat Chicken & Whole Barley adult dry dog food due to salmonella contamination.
The products being pulled from shelves are 3-5-pound bags with the sell by date “Oct. 2014” and UPC code “2014 31071083 17800 12679.” None of their other products are currently being recalled.
No salmonella illnesses have been reported yet in association with this Purina product. Humans can be exposed to the bacteria by handling the food. If you have this product, please safely dispose of it immediately.
Symptoms include fever, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, lethargy and shock. These symptoms may also be found in humans and cats. Failure to treat salmonellosis can lead to gastroenteritis, spontaneous abortions in pregnant dogs, and septicemia.
However, many dogs are asymptomatic carriers, and may shed salmonella for up to 100 days after becoming infected. This may put your family at risk, and it is advisable to have your dog tested by a veterinarian if they have come into contact with the food, even if they do not display symptoms.
