hankHank, the stray dog that wandered into the Milwaukee Brewers’ spring training earlier this year, arrived in Milwaukee for the first time on Sunday and was greeted as a celebrity. Hundreds showed up at the airport to welcome Hank to his new city.

Last month a stray bichon fries mix wandered into the Brewers’ spring training complex and since the day he arrived he has become a huge hit with the organization. Members of the team and organization took turns caring for Hank during spring training while they tried to find his owner.

No owner ever came forward and vice president and general counsel for the Brewers, Marti Wronski, will now be giving Hank a permanent home and family.

Hank’s new family extends far beyond the Wronskis. Hank has become a celebrity in the city of Milwaukee. On Sunday Hank boarded a chartered plane with the rest of the Brewers to return home to Milwaukee and plenty of fans showed up to welcome the newest member of the team, including the mayor.

This week the Brewers will begin selling Hank t-shirts and other memorabilia at the Brewers Team Store, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Hank merchandise will be donated to the Wisconsin Humane Society.

“We couldn’t be more grateful to the Brewers for this generous and unexpected gift,” said President and CEO of the Wisconsin Humane Society, Anne Reed. “We depend upon community support to help more than 25,000 companion and wild animals every year, and it is astounding and inspiring to us that little Hank will help save the lives of so many homeless animals.”
