On Friday, March 7, 2014, a 13-year-old Dachshund was abandoned outside Baldwin Park Animal Shelter in California. His owners left him with a heartbreaking note that asked to have him put to sleep:

“We are both seniors, sick with no money,” read the note. “We cannot pay for vet bills, or to put him to sleep. He has never been away from us in all those years, he cannot function without us, please put him to sleep.”

When shelter employees found the dog they contacted Toby Wisneski, CEO and founder of Leave No Paws Behind and inquired if the organization was willing to help the pet. Otherwise, the canine would be put to sleep.

Baldwin Park Staff named the dog Harley and Leave No Paws Behind agreed to help him. The senior dog suffers from noncontagious demodectic mange but is otherwise healthy. The rescue organization says the pet is eating well and seems to be happy, yet would feel a lot better if he was back with his loved ones.

According to Wisneski, what his owners did was an act of kindness, and because of it his life was saved.

“Their last act of kindness was assuring that Harley was going to be safe and have a good life by leaving him in a basket and leaving him with a note,” Wisneski told KTLA. “By doing that they almost guaranteed he would be taken care of, and for that we are thankful.”

Leave No Paws Behind wants to reunite Harley with his rightful owners. If they are responsible, loving owners, and pass a home check, the organization will pay the dog’s medical costs.

If anyone has any information on Harley’s owners, please contact Leave No Paws Behind at [email protected]. If no one comes forward, Harley will be available to go to a new forever home.
