A Clinton, SC, man has been charged with animal cruelty after two dead dogs, and another so emaciated it now clings to life, were found at the home where he lives with his ailing grandmother.

Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds said he was alerted to situation by the Laurens County Humane Society.

In pictures posted on the Humane Society’s Facebook page, the two dead dogs appear to be chained. The photos were taken by a concerned citizen who was the first to alert the Humane Society about the situation.

Markevious Simpson, 23, was charged with three counts of animal cruelty and giving false information to police. He had initially told police that the dogs belonged to his grandmother.

Deputies said he admitted after further questioning that he owned the dogs.

He was also charged with animal cruelty and the ill treatment of animals because he “knowingly and intentionally deprived an animal (dog) proper food, water, and shelter which resulted in the malnourishment” of the dog, causing it’s bones to be visible.

Simpson’s bond was set at $15,000.
