Amid Election Friction, Dogs are the Great Unifier

As the election wraps up, a dog food maker seeks to remind us that there’s more than unites us than divides us. And sell dog food (we’re still a tad cynical).

Although the nation is often bitterly divided when it comes to politics, dog lovers — in this new PSA/social experiment/ad done by Pedigree dog food — can set aside their differences and come together.

Opening with oppositional signs from both the Trump and Clinton camps, the ad tells viewers that since the election has brought out the worst in us, they “sought to remind people what brings out the good.”

In the experiment, a woman with a golden retriever (wearing the opposing candidate’s shirt, depending on which rally she is visiting) asks people to help her find the lost dog’s owner. Though demonstrators on both sides are initially leery, their love of dogs eventually melts the pretense.

“I love that apparently when it comes to dogs, there’s no political party,” says one woman.

“We do agree that we love dogs, and dogs love us,” says a man dressed in a Trump shirt.

“As the election approached, it became evident to us that our country is very much divided,” said Craig Neely, the vice president of marketing for Mars Petcare, which owns Pedigree, told CNNMoney. “Our intent with this film wasn’t to be political. We really hoped that we could simply play a small role in reminding people that we are more alike than we are different.”
