Founded by Melissa Brickman, a dog trainer who struggled with reading issues of her own as a child, Eastlake, Ohio’s Bark for Books program is not just popular – it is also proving to be very effective for children who struggle with reading.

Brickman trained her Corgi, Jasper, to approach and sit patiently at the side of any child holding a book. Now, Jasper helps comfort kids who are nervous or slower readers.

A reading session took place last Saturday at the Eastlake Library. Children in first through third grades each spent 30 minutes reading to trained therapy dogs. In a video report from WKYC, we meet Vincent Vitale, a first grader who struggled with learning the most basic words – until Jasper and Barks for Books came along.
