When employees at the Humane Society of North Texas came to the shelter on the morning of December 3rd they were surprised to find by a break-in. An 8-week-old lab mix had broken into the shelter overnight, found his way into a kennel where he curled up and slept with an 85-pound Great Pyrenees.

Rudy, weighs just less than five pounds, and had been dumped at the shelter the night of December 2nd. He was left tied up outside the shelter. “People don’t want to wait till the office opens so they just leave them,” said Peggy Brown, an employee at the shelter. Rudy managed to chew his way out of his leash, but instead of running off he decided to break into the shelter to be with the other dogs. Part of Rudy’s amazing escape and break-in was caught on surveillance video.

Once inside the shelter Rudy found a 13-month-old Great Pyrenees named Duke and squeezed his way into Duke’s kennel. “It wasn’t like Duke was at the entrance of the kennels,” said Jerry Cook, a board member of the shelter. “He was in the middle of the building so Rudy had to have walked all that way.”

When employees came in the next morning Duke and Rudy were curled up together. “Some employees have been there 15 years or more, and they had never seen or heard of a dog breaking into the Humane Society,” said Cook. Duke and Rudy’s time as kennel mates didn’t last long. Both dogs have since been adopted.
