Dog finds dog tags

Emma is a black lab puppy who loves to dig and sometimes finds some interesting things. Recently one of Emma’s digs led to the discovery of a Marine’s long lost dog tags.

Emma loves to dig in her back yard and on Monday she proudly brought her latest find to her owner Gerri McNeil. When McNeil looked at what Emma had dug up she realized it was a pair of dog tags. Having family in the military she knew that they would mean a lot to the veteran they belonged to.

“You just get that feeling,” said McNeil. “It just kind of gives you goose bumps and you think there’s more to it. It’s part of who they are.”

McNeil tried to track down the name on the tags herself. Unable to find Joseph Tharp on her own she contacted the police for help. Deputy Sheriff Jason Walters came to pick up the tags and was determined to find Tharp.

Walters was able to find Tharp at the Parkview Nursing and Rehab. On Tuesday night Walters stopped by to visit Tharp and give him his dog tags. It turns out the dog tags had been missing for around 30 years. Tharp was extremely grateful to have them returned.

“I just appreciate it,” said Tharp. “Finding them and returning them.”
