Dog That Has Only Known Life With a Hoarder Is Rescued and Ready to Be Adopted

Hannah has had it rough.  As a puppy, she was adopted by some people that turned out to be hoarders and has only ever known a life of filth, dirt, junk, and clutter.  She was rescued by Prairie Paws Animal Shelter out of Ottawa, Kansas, and after much hard work getting her healthy both physically and mentally, she’s finally ready for adoption.

Let’s see what Prairie Paws has to say about her:

Hannah needs a hero. She is a dachshund with an estimated DOB of 10/26/2009. She was originally brought to the shelter by the Kansas Department of Agriculture and weighed 12.8 pounds at intake.  She was removed from a hoarding situation and would do best with an experienced dog owner as she needs some additional work with socialization.  She would prefer a home without small children, their fast movements seem to terrorize the cutie. With the right kind-hearted person and a little patience, we are sure that Hannah will become a great companion!  Her adoption fee includes sterilization, age appropriate vaccinations, deworming, heartworm testing and a microchip. During the month of December Hannah’s adoption fee is just $25.00.

Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. As we get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

All PPAS puppies and dogs are up to date on all of their vaccines (including rabies if age appropriate), and will be micro chipped and registered in the adopter’s name at the time of adoption. Adopters get a free consultation at an area vet partner within 14 days of adoption. Any dog that is six months of age or older will be tested for Heartworms and if found negative, will be kept on Heartworm prevention during their shelter stay, after the adoption it is up to the adopter to continue the highly recommended Heartworm preventative treatment. Also all PPAS shelter dogs are treated with a monthly topical flea/tick preventative and we ask that adopters continue that treatment as well. Per state law we sterilize all shelter pets before they begin their new fabulous lives with their new families.

Here’s the scoop on the adoption process:

Placing a Hold:  A hold may be placed on an animal for $20.00 a day up to 3 business days ($60.00 max). The hold fee is non-refundable and does not go towards the adoption fee. We encourage you to utilize the hold system if you are interested in a certain pet.  A credit card number may be given over the phone or the fee paid at the shelter to ensure the pet you are interested in is available for a meet and greet.  Placing the animal on hold makes it so others cannot have a meet and greet with the animal until the hold expires. Holds are on a first call/come first serve basis. You must call or come in, holds cannot be put down via email.

In person meet and greet:  Potential adopters must come and meet the animal before an adoption can take place. We cannot do over the phone sight unseen adoptions. Business hours vary and are listed on our website ( or at end of our email correspondence. If you have other animals you would like to bring to the meet and greet we encourage you to do so.  We have outdoor enclosures and trained kennel staff will assist with all meet and greets.  All family members, including children, are encouraged to attend the meet and greet.

Adoption Questionnaire:  Potential adopters will need to fill out the adoption questionnaire.  Adoption questionnaires are available on our website or at the meet and greet.  Once complete, an Adoption Counselor will review the questionnaire with the potential adopter and will have a discussion to ask and/or answer any additional questions.  From there, the adoption counselor will print and review all appropriate paperwork with the adopter to provide important and and educational information regarding the animal.

Adoption fees:  Adoption fees must be paid in full at time of adoption – no partial payments are accepted.  Cash, Check or all major credit cards are accepted.  Adoption fees vary. Please note if you live in the city of Ottawa a dog license fee must also be paid at time of adoption.  Annual renewal of dog licenses is required between January 1st and February 15th.

Taking your animal home:  The State of Kansas requires that all cats and dogs must be sterilized (spayed/neutered) before going to their new homes.  In most cases animals will have already been sterilized before being placed on the adoption floor and you will be able to take your new companion home with you the day of adoption.  However, if the animal is not yet sterilized, they will need to stay at the shelter and we will schedule the surgery on the next available date (usually within a week).  We do request that all dogs go home with a collar/leash, so if you have one please bring it along or we do have a great selection available in our retail area.  All cats must go home in a carrier and we have cardboard carriers available for purchase ($5 plus tax) if needed.

The shelter is open to the public: Mon, Wed, Thurs 11-6 and Sat 11-4.  If you are interested in this cat or kitten, please either email Prairie Paws Animal Shelter at [email protected], for an application visit our website @ or call 785.242.2967 for more information.
