To the relief of his supporters, a judge has denied the Associated Humane Societies’ request to remove Patrick from the Garden State Veterinary hospital and have him held at the Popcorn Park Zoo shelter in Forked River.

Judge Joseph Cassini III ruled today and as a result, Patrick will remain in the care of vets who have treated him since March 16, just after he was found near death in a Newark dumpster.

Cassini noted that Patrick was receiving adequate care, and that he will remain in the custody of Garden State Veterinary Specialists through and until the conclusion of the trial of his alleged abuser, Kisha Curtis.

“Patrick is both the victim and evidence in this case,” said the judge.

Both parties have accused one another of seeking custody to benefit from Patrick’s fame. An attorney for the Associated Humane Societies accused the city of Newark of conspiring with Garden State Veterinary Specialists to profit from the dog, but an attorney representing the city countered that the AHS sought to reap financial benefits from having Patrick held at the Popcorn Park Zoo.
