The loyalty and love displayed by dogs is always admirable and to dog lovers who know them, never surprising. This heartbreaking story illustrates both points.
Last week, in Jonesboro, AR, animal control officers received a call about two dogs at the roadside. One, the caller reported, appeared to have been hit. The other, a sweet senior, refused to leave its friend’s side.
The deceased animal, a black Labrador according to Officer Mike Owens, was likely hit late the night before or earlier that morning.
“It was probably at least five to six hours, at the very least, that they were there,” Owens told ABC13. “We’ve seen them where they will run together and stuff like that but not where one of them had already gone and the other one would be lying beside it.”
He told reporters that getting the dog to go with them was difficult.
“Me and another officer had to pick him up and put him in the back of our truck. Then we had to pick her up and put her in the back of the truck and it seemed to calm him down a little bit when we picked her up but he was still wanting to try and get over to the next kennel.”
Owens says the dog is sweet and loving, but they fear if his owners don’t pick him up soon, he could simply give up and die of a broken heart.
“He’s a little scared. He had cockleburs all over him from running through the weeds and stuff like that, but he’s a very, very friendly dog,” Owens said. “He has been well taken care of. Somebody owns this dog somewhere and hopefully, they will see it with you guys or on Facebook. That’s why I got it on Facebook so quick … to try and find the owner.”
