In 2004 Deb and Dan Dunham lost their son Jason to an insurgent’s grenade in Iraq. Now the Scio, N.Y., couple is healing — and being healed by — another wounded Marine: Gunner, a bomb-sniffing dog traumatized by war.  In this touching interview with the Wall Street Journal, the Dunhams discuss life with Gunner, and if you’re anything like this blogger, you’ll be deeply moved. One could not wish for a better ending.

  1. Wow, that sweet boy really needs an understanding, loving family. Glad there are other dogs for him, along with patient humans. Thx for posting.

  2. With so much ugliness out there, these heartwarming, if still sad, dog tales provide some much needed balance.

  3. Gunner is a TRUE hero……….he tried his BEST……..and that’s what counts!!!! GOD BLESS these people for giving a peaceful, loving home to this retired Marine!!!! xoxo

I really feel for those poor people that lost their son, i can imagine that the terrible pain is always there, yet here they are adopting a difficult four legged friend, with love and patience ,they are teaching him to live again.
