Canadian winters can be cold and harsh, even when properly prepared, but for one little puppy, it nearly cost her life. Demi, a five-week old husky-shepherd mix, was found by a Good Samaritan giving her to Manitoba Underdogs Rescue who, fortunately, happened to have volunteers working in the community that day, feeding and picking up stray animals.
“I’ve never seen a puppy recover after being that cold,”Jessica Hansen, Manitoba Underdogs Rescue Executive Director, told Global News. “I thought she was going to pass away in our arms on the drive to Winnipeg. She was nearly dead. We snuggled her into the chest of one of our volunteers, wrapped her in heat packs, and put some corn syrup on her gums to try and increase her energy levels. She was just so tiny and helpless. It broke our hearts.”
Demi was so cold, when she arrived at the vet, no temperature registered on the thermometer. She is now in an incubator and on the way to the long road of recovery.
The rescue posted on their website:
