The Animal Legal Defense Fund will host the premier for Of Dogs and Men, a documentary that chronicles preventable police shootings of family pet dogs, on Thursday, September 22.
The premise behind the film is the need to keep both police officers and pet dogs safe and with startling statistics, including information from the U.S. Department of Justice that shares every 98 minutes a pet dog is shot and more than 10,000 pet dogs killed by police every year, against the grim reality that no officer has been killed in the line of duty by a dog.
According to the ALDF press release, “The documentary offers comprehensive solutions to turn the trend around through proper training for law enforcement officers.”
“We want police officers to be safe and able to do their jobs effectively, and there are a number of techniques and alternatives to using a gun in an encounter with a dog,” said Animal Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Stephen Wells. “The law needs to mandate that officers receive the training they need to feel comfortable interacting with dogs in the field—without resorting to lethal force.”
