When Dolly announced her campaign, there was a lot of buzz about whom she would select as he running mate.  In an exclusive interview with our sister publication Life With Cats, Dolly shared with us she had selected Adora as her choice for the second-highest post in the land.

In another first, Life With Dogs secured an interview with Adora.  The charming pit bull was as charming and thoughtful as one might expect from both a candidate for high office and a dog.  She enlightened us further about their campaign, the goals, and what they hope to accomplish in the wake of the election.

LIFE WITH DOGS:     What inspired you to join Presidential hopeful Dolly in running for the #2 position in our Nation?

ADORA:     Like Dolly, I am a former homeless pet.  Like Dolly, the odds were stacked against me.  As a backyard breeder pit bull with health issues, I could have easily been overlooked in the shelter.  But we are two of the lucky ones: Special someones gave us a chance, and now we are role models for pet adoption and the importance of spay/neuter.

LWD:          Why do you think you are the ticket of choice for the people and pets of America?

ADORA:     Dolly and I are positive, inspiring examples of the potential that each shelter animal has to be a great friend and family member, or even a leader!  Cats and bully breeds are among the most euthanized shelter pets; We know America loves their pets and stands with us in the goal to end the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable shelter animals.  When Americans support us by donating to our campaign, they are helping us to keep the promise of ending pet homelessness through affordable, effective spay-neuter programs.

LWD:          Since cats and dogs are often known more for not getting along than being best buddies.  What inspired Dolly to seek you out as a running mate?

ADORA:     I pretty much love everyone, including kitties!  Dolly, however, is definitely luke-warm in the dog-love department.  But even Dolly realizes the importance of a balanced ticket, and she knew that with my bully-breed credentials and PR experience, I was the best candidate for the job of running mate!

LWD:          Did the idea to run for office or your platform, “Fix America,” come first?

ADORA:     WearWoof, for whom I am SpokesDog, has long been interested in spay-neuter programming, and most of their fundraising is centered on their program, the Pittsburgh Spay Neuter Project.  With this year’s election around the corner, it only seemed natural to create a fundraising campaign that had an election theme.  Dolly was the natural choice for the face of the campaign.  (And me, too!)

LWD:          With this platform, how to you hope to inspire the American people, canines, and felines (but mostly the humans)?

ADORA:     9,000 red-blooded, freedom-loving dogs and cats die every day in American shelters for lack of a home. We think that Americans, who definitely loves their pets, would be surprised to hear that number includes puppies and kittens – healthy, adoptable animals.  We want to join the rising voice of the animal welfare community in raising the collective national awareness for the plight of man’s best friends.  We feel that it’s one of the few problems facing America that individuals can actually DO something about.  it’s certainly solvable if we all work together.

LWD:          What are your thoughts on your opponents and their seemingly “dog-eat-dog” behavior?

ADORA:     If a tabby cat and a pit bull can come together toward a mutual goal, why can’t we all?  At WearWoof, we believe in inclusiveness – that everyone deserves a place at the table.  Only through collaboration and compromise can we create positive, lasting changes.

LWD:          Win or lose, what do you hope will be taken away from your campaign?

ADORA:     $250,000!  We have a big fundraising goal because we have big plans.  By partnering with local shelters, we want to add 5,000 surgeries a year to our region’s spay-neuter efforts.  We hope that through our collective efforts people will recognize Pittsburgh as a City of Champions for animals!

LWD:          What do you hope others will learn from your stepping up and putting yourself out there to run for such an important office?

ADORA:     My hope is that America will recognize the amazing potential of the shelter pet.  I went from homeless, breeder pit bull to Certified Therapy Dog and Bully Breed Ambassador because of the wonderful shelter and woman (my mom, Sarah!) who gave me a second chance at my best life.  Every dog and cat, no matter the breed or pedigree, has a heart that beats with anticipation for the love of a best human friend.
