oscar1Oscar’s story is a cautionary reminder to pet owners what can happen when your dog rides in the back of a pickup truck.

On December 10th, Oscar was thrown from the back of a moving truck that was going 55 miles per hour.  Oscar’s leg was completely shattered in several places. With such severe trauma to his leg, and him still being a puppy, veterinarians decided the best option for helping him was to amputate his leg.

Oscar’s owners couldn’t afford his vet care and he was brought to the Asheville Humane Society.  Oscar was placed in a foster home for the duration of his recovery, but now he is ready to find a forever home and be adopted.

Shelter workers estimate that each year 100,000 dogs die riding in the back of trucks. They can be thrown from the truck, accidentally fall out or even slide out an open tailgate. “Many pet owners don’t realize the dangers associated with this practice,” said Katherine Shenar, President of Asheville Humane Society. “We believe Oscar represents a tremendous opportunity to bring a positive message about responsible transportation of your pets,” added Lieutenant Randy Sorrells of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department.
