Holly was recently adopted through the Mutt-i-grees mixed breed adoption program of the  North Shore Animal League, Port Washington, NY. The young pup got a home with a hero recently honored for his service protecting dogs in Iraq and rehoming them in the US.
.
As NSAL puts it, “Holly the Mutt-i-gree puppy has a hero’s home! She was adopted by Steven Johnston who was presented with our Hero Award for saving several homeless puppies and dogs while on tour in Iraq. Steven’s determination was unwavering as he and his fellow soldiers cared for the dogs under the most difficult of circumstances, moving them from bombed-out buildings to safe hiding places in the war-torn region.
.
“When his tour of duty was up he worked with a group called Operation Baghdad Pups to transport three puppies and a dog he named Oso back to the safety of the United States. Steven found homes for the three pups and added Oso to his family, which already included an adopted dog from our shelter.
.
” ‘Our 2 kids absolutely love her and so do our other dogs,’ Penny, his wife said. ‘She was great on the car ride home to Connecticut. She has been sleeping well. She loves toys and balls – very spunky little girl! She goes to her crate when she gets tired. Has been eating 3 meals a day and loves the lean treats the vet just turned her on to. She is a very good girl. Thank you!’ Both Penny and Steven met Holly at our gala last month right before he accepted his award.”

At the North Shore Animal League awards gala in December, 2012, The “Hero Award” was presented to Steven Johnston, for his service caring for several homeless puppies and dogs while on tour in Iraq. Steven’s determination was unwavering; he and his fellow soldiers cared for the dogs under the most difficult of circumstances, moving them from bombed-out buildings to safe hiding places in the war-torn region. Then, when Steven’s tour was up, he worked with a Operation Baghdad Pups to transport three puppies and his treasured companion, the young dog he named Oso, back to the safety of the United States, where he found homes for the three pups.
.
In accepting his award, Steven said, “My love for animals has no border. I don’t see myself as a hero—just an ordinary guy with an extraordinary love for animals.” The audience clearly disagreed with Steven’s assessment of his own heroism, giving him a rousing standing ovation. As she presented him with his award, Kathryn Erbe called Steven “a true American hero, both for animals and humans alike.”
