UPS Driver comes to the rescue of neglected dog

A UPS driver came to the aid of a neglected dog in Indiana last week.  The dog is now recovering and has developed a following of supporters.

Last Monday a UPS driver spotted Phoenix tied to a tree on a short leash outside a home in Bowling Green, Indiana. Conditions outside were freezing and the dog had no shelter and showed signs of neglect. The UPS driver contacted Clay County Shelter informing them that a dog needed immediate care.

The shelter drove to the dog and found him in a fetal position lying against the tree. He had no food, no water, or shelter. He was in such terrible shape the shelter van driver feared the dog wouldn’t make it back to the shelter alive.

Phoenix beat the odds though and surprised a lot of people when he survived his first night at the shelter. Veterinarians found that Phoenix is deaf and had frostbite on his ears. Phoenix is severely underweight and will need to put on significant weight to fully recover. He is currently in the care of a foster family and his progress in the past 11 days has been remarkable though.

The Clay County Humane Society is keeping Phoenix fans up to date with his progress on their Facebook page. Donations can be made online at or by mail at P.O. Box 277 Brazil, IN 47834.

Thank you kind Mr. UPS driver! May your life be blessed for caring for a living creature that would have died had you not stepped in. I wish you blessings upon blessings for your kindness!!!!

Hang in there Phoenix. I hope you find the home and love you deserve. The person that did this to him needs to be tied to a tree on a leash that when at full length will be about a foot short of his reach for food, water, and shelter. When I read stories on this page it is such a roller coaster of thoughts/emotions. Virtually every story shows you the worst in humanity, but it turns around and shows you the best and hope for humanity. As Ghandi said: “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

The breeder ought to be ashamed that one of their pups ended up in this situation. Chances are they are still breeding more. This is horrible!!

exactly, why breed dogs to end up in this situation, especially a breed of dog that takes a lot of feeding. The stray dog situation especially breeds like Pit bulls which are being persecuted, the breeding needs to be stopped.

Thank you to those who take the time and do not choose to look the other way – they actually ACT on their insticts….<3 UPS person

What the heck, Julieb – you’re blaming the Dane’s breeder for the idiotic owner’s actions?? That makes no sense at all. Don’t be just another animal rights extremist hater – that poor dog was tied there by its’ OWNER – *that* is the person who’s responsible for this heinous action, and *that* is the person who will hopefully pay for the harm done to this young dog.

Thank you UPS driver for making the call to help that poor pup. Bravo!

WRONG -peopel should NOT be breeding while animals die in shelters all fro selfish greed. And if you make your money off the bak of an animal that you damn well better make sure you sell the animal o the right person

Some breeders do not care where their pups end up, they are just in it for the money. A lot breeders keep in touch with the new owners of the pups they sell and often become friends to know the progress of the pups. NOT all do this. Rightly so the “Owner” is responsible for the bad treatment of this Great Dane. I own a rescued Gt Dane. She is wonderful.

Yes, the breeder has some responsibility to make sure that each and every pup they birth into this world has a decent home for life. The breeder is responsible for the creation of this life, they darn better make sure they are not sending a defenseless puppy into a life of hell possibly followed by a tortuous death. I have a so called “breeder” in my neighborhood. That woman would sell a puppy to anyone just as long as they pay her in cash. She doesn’t care where her puppies end up. Plus she produces so many puppies she couldn’t possibly keep track of them all.

Poor puppy, good for the the UPS driver. I think they should do the same to the owners so they know how this poor puppy felt. Then throw their asses in jail

Hi, a huge thank you to the kind UPS driver and Clay County Rescue centre.
Hugs to Phoenix and his foster family; thank you for fostering Phoenix.
I’m sure when Phoenix is recovered he will find his forever home.
It is still beyond belief that anyone could treat any dog so cruelly.
They should be sentenced to hard labour for ever.
Good luck to Phoenix, he sure deserves it.

What is being done about the home owners that neglected him and got him to this state?

“It is indeed, a terrible, terrible time, when the punishment ; so sadly, does not fit the crime” I agree wholeheartedly with Sandy, the horrible hand that dealt this devastating injustice to an innocent animal needs to be treated the exact same way; but as Sandy declared, have no satisfaction, only the suffering that begat this poor creature.
Wake up peeps…as long as the deeds of perpertrators like Mikhael Vick, are dealt with by a slap on the hand, it sets NO PRECEDENCE OR STANDARDS.
My personal punishment would have him set against a grizzly bear in a fight for his life where he would loose very, very, very badly…just sayin’

I have seen firsthand the waste of life AND TAXPAYER DOLLARS that are the sad, sorrow filled end to many of the animals that are not fortunate enough to find a family. That is the only CONTEXT in which an animal should be referred. PART OF YOUR FAMILY, that is what you sign up for when you bring an animal into your home…and the “So called “Breeders”, I have another name for them; I’ll post where to go see me on my youtube page when the time is right…all I have to say now is these people (ESPECIALLY those that breed the “Designer Dogs”) while perfectly good, loving adoptable animals suffer and languish just praying in their own doggie way that someone, someday, somewhere, will take them home to love. They should be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES…I liken it to humans giving birth and the Dr. coming in and proclaiming “Wait, look at the new and improved model we have!” taking your child and discarding it for something someone else deems better. It’s WRONG.
For God sakes we need a permit to wipe our brhind anymore but these people go on unregulated, supervised and wreckless, continuing to burden our society with extra, unwanted animals to be incinerated at the expense of the taxpayers…go America!

So was the owner prosected? You always hear about animals being rescued from some horrible situation or about them dying but you never hear who, why, etc… So, did something happen to the dog ower or are they out there doing this again to another dog right now?
