Robert Shadrick from southern Indiana was sleeping when his house caught fire, but his dog Max barked until Shadrick was made aware of the flames engulfing his home.

According to a report published in Evansville Courier & Press, the fire started just before 12:30 a.m. and luckily, local fire department had the blaze under control within a half-hour.

After Max barked and awoke Shadrick, the dog ran away to escape the fire. He was later found on a neighboring street.

Shadrick knows that Max is the reason why he is alive today and hours after the fire Shadrick took to Facebook to praise his dog’s brave actions.

“I would have to say he is my guardian angel,”  Shadrick posted on Facebook. “Thank you, Max. You are my HERO.”
