Jenna Dawyer and Daniel. Daniel will compete in the Hero Dog Awards.

In Nutley, NJ, Daniel did something very few dogs do. He survived the gas chamber. Daniel, a typical beagle – sweet-tempered, loving, and smart – is the winner in the Emerging Hero category of the American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards. “Since adopted by his loving guardian, Joe Dawyer, Daniel the ‘Miracle Beagle’ has used his second chance at life as an advocate for shelter adoptions and humane euthanasia legislation across the United States,” said a representative of the AHA.

Daniel is also up for another award: the American Hero Dog Award, AHA’s most prestigious honor. Voting continues until midnight on October 5th. On October 6th, Daniel and his people will be meeting Betty White, animal lover and actress, at the star-studded event. The awards ceremony will air on the Hallmark Channel on November 2nd.

Because Daniel won the Emerging Dog category, his charity of choice, the Pine Street Foundation, has received $5,000. If Daniel takes the top dog honor, the Foundation will receive an additional $10,000 to support its efforts in canine cancer detection research.
