Dogs are happy with news of the new FDA drugs

Good news for our furry canine friends! The FDA has approved three new drugs to help manage post-surgery pain for dogs, chewable tablets that prevent tapeworms, in addition to heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms, and a chewable tablet for treating pyoderma, a secondary superficial bacterial infection on the skin.

Veterinarians now have the option of prescribing Recuvyra (fentanyl), a transdermal solution to manage postoperative pain. Rather than trying to get your dog to take a pill in food when they have no appetite, this new drug is applied to the skin and and a single dose can control pain for at least four days.

Interceptor Spectrum, a close cousin of Interceptor, is a chewable tablet that treats heartworm disease, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms, but now also treats tapeworms. This new drug is approved for puppies who are at least 6 weeks old and weigh at least 2 pounds. One less thing to worry about.

The last and latest approved drug is Rilexine (cephalexin) chewable tablets to treat pyoderma, a secondary bacterial skin infection. Pyoderma can cause intense, uncomfortable itching caused by hot spots, allergies to fleas, or if the skin has been broken due to an injury or constant scratching.

As always, do your research because you are your dog’s best advocate. Discuss all available options with your veterinarian to decide what will be most effective for your dog.
