Ten months after Cheyanne was found on the streets so skinny and weak that she was unable to stand she is now ready to go home with the loving family she deserves. To the staff that worked tirelessly to nurse her back to health she is a miracle dog.
On May 25, 2012 Cheyanne was fighting to survive on the streets of Eaglehawk, Victoria. She was rushed to the RSPCA where she weighed in at only 11 kg, less than half of the 30 kg she should have weighed. Staff at the RSPCA didn’t think she would survive. She was dehydrated, malnourished and her boy was so skinny her body was unable to hold heat.
The veterinary staff didn’t give up on her though, keeping her warm with blankets, heater and hot water bottles they slowly nursed her back to health. The community stepped up and supported Cheyanne, paying for her treatment, donating blankets and toys and offering their homes.
The woman responsible for Cheyanne’s treatment was found, along with Cheyanne’s six puppies. The woman, 23-year-old Kiri Ody, surrendered all the puppies, who were put into foster care. She was charged and convicted for her crimes against the dogs and fined thousands of dollars and banned from owning an animal for six years.
Over the past months Cheyanne has been recovering in foster care with one of the vet nurses from the RSPCA. She now weighs more than 25 kilograms and after she completes behavioral tests in the next few weeks she will be ready to find a permanent home.
