Kathleen Smith’s pit bull Chico wandered off her property and she couldn’t find him. On Wednesday she heard him barking. “I thought I lost him, and I was just clapping my hands and whistling, and I could hear him barking,” said Smith. “It echoes around the river, but I went down and sure enough he was down there right on the ledge.”
Chico was down a steep embankment and instead of trying to reach Chico herself Smith called for help. A Clackamas firefighter rappelled down the steep terrain to Chico. He gave Chico some treats and then lowered the dog down to firefighters who were waiting in a boat below. Chico is lucky and doing well, a little hungry and scared, but physically okay.
