11.6.14 - App Donates Money for Dog-Walking1

Want to help shelter dogs at the same time you help your own dogs?  There’s a new app that will let you do just that, by donating money to the shelter of your choice every time you walk your pup.  And what’s more, you don’t pay a thing – the money comes from sponsorship.

The developers at WoofTrax created the free app and called it Walk for a Dog.  So far, over 4,000 shelters have gotten on board.  It’s available on the Google Play Store and the App Store.

“It’s hard to get people to do something new,” WoofTrax CEO Doug Hexler told the San Francisco Chronicle. “But millions of people are already walking their dogs every day. We simply wanted to encourage that activity and add more value to it.”

Once it’s downloaded and you’ve chosen the shelter you’d like to donate to, hit “start walking” and the app keeps track.  The amount of money to be donated is based on how much walking you do.  Rates vary from 11 to 25 cents per mile.

“The miles are factored in, but not heavily, as Walk for a Dog users are of all ages and abilities,” Hexler told HuffPost.  “A walk with your dog around the block or a 5-mile hike all count. We simply wanted to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get out there and walk their dog.”

Sponsors, investors, and advertising are how the donations are raised.  There isn’t a limit to how many people can join, so make sure you share this with as many people as possible so shelters can get lots of funding!
