Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego has just sent out the following press release in honor of our Veterans.

Rancho Santa Fe, CA (Nov. 7, 2016) – Kicking off this Veterans Day, Helen Woodward Animal Center salutes our military with an “Animals for Armed Forces 3-Day Event.” In partnership with Animals for Armed Forces Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting orphan pets with military heroes, adoption fees will be covered for approved military families, while supplies last.  The special adoption promotion takes place this Friday, November 11th through Sunday, November 13th with adoption fees covered for approved military families.

The Animals for Armed Forces 3-Day Event is one way Helen Woodward Animal Center extends its gratitude towards the wonderful men and women who have served our country.  The unconditional love of a pet provides years of comfort, laughter, joy and devotion – crucial elements to assist military members and their families whose lives have been dedicated to dangerous careers and necessary bravery.  The families, in turn, are lifesavers to orphan pets longing to find their forever homes.

This is not the first time Helen Woodward Animal Center has partnered with Animals for Armed Forces Foundation.  In fact, the promotional salute to military families has been a special part of Center adoption events for the last three years.  A similar event on Memorial weekend earlier this year helped find homes for a record number of orphan pets – an incredible 108 adoptions during the 3 days, placing 61 of these pets with military families.

Proof of the symbiotic relationship between pets and the military can be seen throughout Helen Woodward Animal Center programs.  In the Center’s Pet Encounter Therapy program (serving 60-70 veterans monthly at the VA Hospital and the Hawthorne Center) therapeutic animals are utilized to help lower blood pressure, even breathing, improve memory and lift the spirits of wounded soldiers.  The Center’s AniMeals program, in partnership with Blue Buffalo, provides pet food to wounded military clients with beloved service dogs, crucial to physical and emotional healing, through the Recovery Care Coordinator Office (RCC) and the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS).

“We are really grateful to Animals for Armed Forces Foundation for supporting our belief that orphan pets and military families provide a mutual benefit to one another,” stated Helen Woodward Animal Services Manager Ed Farrelly.  “The incredible men and women who serve our country protect the lives of our citizens and by adopting, they save the lives of an orphan pet.  In return, that pet gives them a lifetime of love, devotion and gratitude.”

Helen Woodward Animal Center encourages military families (current, former/retired and/or immediate family members of the: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard) to find their furry new family member Friday, November 11thththrough Sunday, November 13th.
