Those who were outraged by an Arkansas mayor’s decision to set shelter animals loose in a town forest will be saddened to learn that the situation has not improved with time. Given that more than two years have passed, I fear that these poor animals may have been forgotten by the rest of the world.

Well meaning animal lovers are trying to feed the strays, but the writing is on the wall: if someone does not capture these dogs matters will only get worse. In an interview with News 3, Kate Freres with the Humane Society of the Delta expresses frustration at the lack of local resources available to animals – in fact, as you’ll learn, there are none at all.

  1. OMD, that is just so pathetic. How that mayor thought he was solving a problem is beyond us. Sheer Stupidity.

  2. @ Jenn: correction: it takes depth to be an a**hole. The idiot is so shallow he’s an a**rim.

Petition to have the Helena mayor released into the wild for two years. Naked except for a a collar.

  3. That has to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard? How does one person have authority to do something like that? I’m from Australia so we have state government that overrides local government, how didn’t any higher ranking being intervene and stop this from happening?? How absurd!

  4. I agree with releasing the mayor. How very stupid and “inhuman” he was! However, it never ceases to amaze me that ridiculous behaviors like this happen all too frequently. Thank goodness for those who were able to help them, and at least feed them.

  5. The sad truth is that as long as dogs are considered as anything other than the wonderful companions that they are, they will always be mistreated, misused and abandoned; it doesn’t matter the method or reasoning. Ultimately, it is a heart attitude that requires adjusting. Having said that, it is a shame that there is no law against stupidity…that mayor has an over abundance of it.

  6. Somebody in the town needs to look at the Stray Rescue of St. Louis model. Get some crates donated, recruit foster homes, and start trapping, spaying, and rehabbing these dogs! This is awful!
