hurricane dogA beautiful young yellow lab is likely missing his family very much right now.  He was found in the area of Reading which is in Berks County, Pennsylvania some time after Hurricane Sandy hit.  His rescuer, who was on his way to Philadelphia, took him to an animal-friendly emergency shelter in Philadelphia, Damon March, director of operations for the Humane Society of Berks County explained.

The un-neutered male dog is thought to be about 2 years about, and has no micro chip or collar by which to identify him.   “People in our community lost a lot in the hurricane, and if we can help this guy and his people get back together, it’s a step in the right direction,” March said.  It is unknown exactly where the dog was picked up because the rescuer was not from the area and did not take note of the exact location.  This makes it more difficult to find the dog’s family.

The Humane Society of Berks County was notified after the dog was dropped off at the shelter  by a member of the Philadelphia County Animal Response Team.  This is a great reminder to pet owners that microchipping your dog can be vital to finding him/her in the event that they go missing or are lost.  Collars are also excellent tools for identifying dogs, but during a storm or traumatic event a stressed dog can slip out of a collar or break free from a lead and without a microchip the process of re-uniting dogs with their families can be very difficult.

Right now though, this young guy needs his family back, so if you think you know who this dog is, please contact http://berkshumane.net/cms/ and help create a happy reunion for all.
