Twelve years later Spirit is aging gracefully and happily

Spirit’s life changed forever in October of 2000 when she was rescued after being doused with gasoline, set on fire and left for dead in a cemetery. Her life essentially began anew after Vicki Kavanaugh, then superintendent at the Evansville Vanderburgh Animal Care & Control shelter, looked into her eyes and saw the fighting spirit that she was named for.

Tabitha, hero guide dog, and best friend

Twelve years ago, Anne Drake thought life was over as she received news that she was going blind. “I thought I was never going to be able to do anything again,” Drake said. “In the process of losing my sight, I lost who I was. I was no longer Anne, but I became somebody I didn’t know.” Then along came Tabitha, an incredible guide dog that joined Drake for the new journey she was embarking on.

Police looking for help to find dog abuser

Police found a dog near death in Aurora, Ontario this morning and are looking for help to identify the person or people who mistreated it. The dog was found last Sunday at about 12:45 p.m.curled up in a ball under a tree, suffering from serious head injuries.

Locked in a cupboard and unloved, Lily needs your help

A sweet but neglected and abused 3 year old Shar Pei who has lost all of her hair is now in the care of the RSPCA and living with a foster mum. The young dog, who has already given birth to 4 litters is currently completely bald due to having an untreated skin condition which also left her sore and very itchy.

Survival and tragedy in the wake of superstorm sandy

The toll of hurricane Sandy continues to mount, and for one dog survival is bittersweet. Jessie Streich-Kest and her friend Jacob Vogelman were out walking Max when a tree fell on them, killing both Streich-Kest and Vogelman. Max, pit-bull-pointer-shepherd mix, survived but was trapped under the tree until he was saved by a good Samaritan.

A life saved, as a devoted rescue dog watches out for her owner

It was the middle of the night, and heart patient Dan Fletcher woke up and became dizzy. In attempting to return to his bed, he stumbled around and banged into walls, presumably calling out for help. Bindi, a Border collie cross-breed, was as always asleep in Fletcher’s room but became alert immediately to the problem and ran barking for help.
